Scope
This standard for sealed rechargeable nickel-cadmium cylindrical bare cells1 includes definitions@ theory of operation@ tabulation of physical characteristics@ and electrical and mechanical procedures for testing various important performance characteristics of sealed nickel cadmium cells of the cylindrical type. This standard applies to sealed rechargeable nickel cadmium cylindrical single bare cells. They are nonrefillable@ have a sealed electrolyte system@ can be charged and discharged in any orientation@ and shall fulfill the requirements in other sections of this standard. The standard covers the sizes in most popular use at the time of revision. Additional sizes will be considered for inclusion as they are developed. The electrical tests outlined in this standard present a standardized procedure for determining each of several characteristics that are important to the user of these rechargeable cells. The procedures are generalized to the extent that the basic capacity rating is used to establish the variables for each test. This test philosophy allows standard procedures for determining all important performance characteristics regardless of cell size. Standards for sealed nickel-cadmium cells of configurations other than cylindrical may also utilize the same basic test procedure without need for restricting the procedure to specific cell configurations. The tests outlined are not intended to be all-inclusive@ but represent procedures for defining those performance parameters of the most universal concern. It is recognized that some applications will require performance criteria not covered by the test procedures contained in this standard. Procedures for testing such performance criteria may be incorporated in this standard as industrywide applications suggest the need. 1Cells can be obtained from the manufacturer with terminal connection devices and insulating sleeves or jackets made from a variety of insulating materials. The added dimensional effects of these sleeves@ jackets@ and terminals will vary with the material@ design of the sleeve@ and the configuration of the positive terminal.
