Scope
INTRODUCTION This document was prepared at the request of the American Petroleum Institute to serve as a reference for hydrocarbon analysis. It is a compilation of the sampling and analytical methods currently used by the petroleum industry laboratories and their contractors. Published@ standard@ or known methods and techniques for the determination of petroleum hydrocarbons and selected inorganics in groundwater and soil are abstracted and referenced. New and/or previously unpublished methods and modifications@ submitted by API members or their contractors@ are also included. API members and their contractors provided the information for this guidance document. Their responses to a questionnaire provided the list of the published methods and references most frequently used in their laboratories. Some submitted@ for inclusion in this document@ articles detailing modifications or novel sampling and analytical procedures used by their organizations. In November 1984@ the API sponsored a workshop in Denver@ Colorado. The purpose of the Workshop was to discuss the sampling and analytical methods currently used for determining petroleum hydrocarbons in groundwater and soil. The information nature of the workshop permitted the free exchange of technical information between members of the API and technical contractors. Methods and techniques discussed at that workshop are summarized in this document. The workshop proceedings are also available from the American Petroleum Institute.
