Scope
PURPOSE AND SCOPE: This SAE Recommended Practice is intended to provide information on the repair and refinishing of lightweight@ flexible bumper components made of non-metallic materials. The use of plastic compounds for these components has expanded from the now familiar polyurethane to include polycarbonate blends and modified polypropylenes. Some of these materials@ namely blends from the polyolefin group@ require specialized products@ such as adhesion promoters@ to enable the repair material to adhere to the substrate. Components of this type are receiving expanded usage@ especially on passenger car bumpers. Experience indicates that these relatively expensive components can be readily repaired@ even after sustaining relatively severe collision damage. Repairs can be made with a number of structural repair products available from body shop suppliers. This recommended practice illustrates how damage maybe repaired on a typical bumper Cover1. It should be noted that appropriate safety precautions should be taken when working with power tools@ and the instructions pertaining to each manufacturer's product should be followed at all times. 1Procedures described in the report are based on work and studies done by Tech-Cor Research and Engineering Staff.
