Scope
Purpose This specification establishes the requirements and procedures for producing a hard@ wear resistant ion nitrided surface on steel parts. Application The ion nitriding process is typically applied to increase surface hardness@ increase wear resistance@ and reduce the coefficient of friction of alloy steels@ tool steels@ nitriding steels@ corrosion resistant steels@ carbon steels@ ferrous powder metal products@ and other ferrous alloys but usage is not limited to such applications. The provisions of this specification revision shall become effective 90 days after publication. Classifications Processes covered by this specification are classified as follows: Class 1: 0.0005 inch (0.013 mm) maximum white layer thickness permitted Class 2: 0.001 inch (0.025 mm) maximum white layer thickness permitted If no class is specified@ Class 2 will apply.
