- This standard applies to rails of types P43, P50, P65 and P75 and establishes ultrasonic testing methods for identifying internal defects in the head, neck and the area of continuation of the neck into the base of rails: delaminations, flakes, cavities, concentrated segregations, cracks, electric contact welding defects. The standard does not specify methods for ultrasonic testing of surfacing. The nature of defects is not determined during ultrasonic testing. The need for ultrasonic testing, the scope of testing, types and sizes of unacceptable defects are established in the standards or technical specifications for rails
