- This document provides guidance for organizations engaged in project or program management to carry out activities related to work breakdown structures. This document is applicable to all types of public or private organizations, organizations or units of different sizes, and projects or programs of varying complexity, scale, and duration. This document gives an explanation of the terms and definitions, concepts, characteristics, benefits, uses, integration and use, and associations related to the work breakdown structure. This document does not give guidance on workflows, methods or tools related to the development and application of WBS practices. Examples of work breakdown structures and their relationships to other breakdown structures are given in Appendix A and Appendix B, respectively.
