PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF REVIEW This review surveys the literature concerning fate and effects of benzene@ xylene@ and toluene in aquatic ecosystems. We incurred a great amount of difficulty in obtaining non-English articles. Literature was obtained in two ways: manual searching of selected journals@ and use of computer based retrieval systems@ BIOSIS (Biological Medicine)@ and Selected Water Research Abstracts were the data bases searched. Unpublished data on effects of toluene on the Japanese medaka were graciously provided by Drs. F.W. Stoss and T.A. Haines@ Department of Biological Sciences@ State University College@ Brockport@ N.Y.
