INTRODUCTION The objective of this program is to determine the nature and extent of the interaction of sulfur dioxide with the photo-induced reactions of hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides in air. To accomplish this@ reactions of the system SO2/1-butene/NO/air have been examined. * Experiments were conducted to measure the rates of formation and depletion of the principal species and the rate of aerosol formation in a 200-liter reaction system. SO2 concentration and relative humidity were the principal variables. * The use of 1-butene as the hydrocarbon was specified by the Task Force because Its reactivity is close to that of auto exhaust It should@ therefore@ give the best simulation of a polluted atmosphere possible with a single hydrocarbon However@ because of the complexity of atmospheric reactions extrapolations from this laboratory system to atmospheric conditions must be made with caution
