Scope
This preliminary standard describes a method for the digestion of soil and sludge with nitric acid and hydrochloric acid, which uses a microwave oven and the elements to be determined are brought into solution in such a way that content determination is possible with atomic spectrometry. The preliminary standard applies to all types of soil and sludge. After digestion, the elements in the debris can be determined. Notes 1. Highly reactive or volatile materials, when heated, can cause such a pressure that the valves of the plastic1) containers burst open. It is therefore necessary to strictly follow the instructions in this preliminary standard and those in the manual of the manufacturer of the equipment used. 2. This standard is intended for systems where the pressure is limited to 1 x 106 Pa. The digestion is comparable to the normal aqua regia digestion under reflux. 3. Higher-pressure systems and systems operating at atmospheric pressure may be extremely useful, but no research has yet been done into the digestion efficiencies achieved.
