"FOREWORD The work reported herein constitutes the first year's effort toward the identification and characterization of compounds responsible for the odor of diesel engine exhaust. The program was entitled@ ""Chemical Species in Engine Exhaust and Their Contribution to Exhaust Odors."" The project number was IITRI C8150. This report has two sections@ a Summary and Conclusions section and a section containing several appendices. The most significant results of the study are presented and discussed in the first section@ while the details of engine operation@ sampling procedures@ chromatograph techniques@ and results of secondary significance are reported in the appendices. The material presented in each section is complementary and a reading of the entire report is necessary for a comprehensive understanding of the results. However@ each section is self-sustaining and the significant results can be fully grasped by reading the first section only. Data obtained during the program are recorded in Logbooks C18880@ C19221@ C19225 and C19226. Personnel who contributed to the program include Miss J. Burton@ Drs. B.K. Krotoszynski and R. Scholz. and Messrs.T. Burgwald@ H. Neumann@ T. Stanley@ A. Anderson@ E. Lubeeke. N. Shaw@ H. Reilich and T. Rymarz."
