Scope
ABSTRACT A petroleum derived hydrocarbon mixture@ API No. 81-04@ was evaluated for its acute inhalation toxicity. Five young adult rats of each sex were exposed to a target vapor concentration of 5.0 milligrams/liter (mg/L) for 4 hours. Vapors were generated by a counter current distillation process and administered in the breathing air of the animals utilizing dynamic whole body exposure methods. Analysis of vapor concentrations was performed by continuously measuring total hydrocarbon content and yielded a time weighted average of 5.25 + 0.16 mg/L@ for API material 81-04. Only background concentrations of particles were detected in the exposure chamber and no significant increase in particle size distribution was seen in the exposure chamber compared to filtered air. No animals died or exhibited clinical signs during the course of the exposures or during the 14 day observation period. No toxic signs of any significance were seen in animals of either sex that could be attributed to exposure to the test materials. Individual and mean body weights were not affected by exposure to the test material. Histopathological examination of lung tissues yielded minimal pulmonary findings@ none that could be attributed to exposure of these animals to the test material vapor.
