This publication consists of a general discussion and specific precautions to be followed by personnel for the storage and handling of asphalt products derived from crude petroleum when stored in heated tanks. These products are: paving asphalt cements; road oils; slow@ medium and rapid curing cutback asphalts; asphalt emulsions; asphalt compounded with special hydrocarbon-type diluents; and fillers and industrial asphalts such as those used for roofing@ waterproofing and others (see Specifications for Paving and Industrial Asphalts S5-2@ The Asphalt Institute@ College Park@ Maryland). These precautions are also applicable to blowing fluxes@ crude oil residua and crude oils of low volatility that may be stored above the boiling point of water.
