Scope
The preliminary standard applies to the determination of the concentration of one or more of the following volatile aromatic hydrocarbons in workplace air using an adsorption tube filled with activated carbon as an adsorbent: aromatic hydrocarbons CAS no. V (synonyms) a. benzene 71-43-2 b. toluene 108-88-3 c. ethylbenzene 100-41-4 d. o-xylene 95-47-6 e. m-xylene 108-38-3 f. p-xylene 106-42-3 g. styrene 100-42-5 h. cumene (isopropylbenzene) 98-82-8 i. 1,2,3-trimethylbenzene 526-73-8 j. 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene 95-63-6 k. 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene 108-67-8 I. p-tert-butyltoluene 98-51-1 m. 3-methylstyrene 100-80-1 n. 4-methylstyrene 622-97-9 o. a-methylstyrene 98-83-9 (isopropenyl benzene) 1) CAS No. = Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number. The preliminary standard can be used for a concentration range from 1 to 1000 mg/m3 with a sample volume of 10 L and a sampling period of 15 minutes to 8 hours. For the limitations on the area of application, see also NVN 2947. Other components that have an equal or almost equal retention time in the gas chromatographic analysis as the substance(s) to be determined can interfere. The interference can be reduced by correct choice of column and setting of the gas chromatograph. The sampling method is suitable for both personal sampling and location-based sampling and provides an average concentration over a certain time (time-weighted average, TGG). For alternative determination methods for volatile aromatic hydrocarbons see NVN 2957, NVN 2958 and NVN 2959.
