Scope
The preliminary standard applies to exposure rate measurements using portable equipment equipped with a gas ionization detector (the preliminary standard therefore does not apply to equipment with scintillation detectors). The measurements are carried out in the context of accidents involving radioactive substances, involving gamma and X-ray radiation. Examples of such accidents are a fire in a radionuclide laboratory or an accident during the transport of radioactive material by road. The exposure measurements described in this preliminary standard will be used after such an accident to detect local increases in the exposure rate compared to the natural background (hot spots) and to localize the contamination. Fixed exposure meters (NVN 5630) are used in the Netherlands for early detection of an accident involving a nuclear reactor. The preliminary standard describes the method for determining the exposure rate in the field and of objects. Appendix A discusses the applicability of the method in more detail.
