This standard covers the empirical test method for determining the Saybolt or Furol viscosities of petroleum products at temperatures between 21°C and 99°C (70°F and 210°F). It also establishes a special procedure for wax-based products. NOTE 1. To determine kinematic viscosity, the test methods given in ASTM D 445 and ASTM D 2170 are recommended, which require smaller samples, less time and are more precise. In the method indicated in the ASTM D 2161 standard there are tables to convert kinematic viscosities into Saybolt viscosity. It is recommended to take kinematic viscosities and not Sayboit viscosities to calculate their indices. Normalized values are those given in SI units. 1.3 The materials, operations and equipment used in the application of the standard may present risks. This standard is not intended to point out all the industrial safety problems related to its application. The user has the responsibility of establishing, before using it, the appropriate industrial safety and occupational health conditions and, likewise, applying current legislation in this regard.
