Scope
The purpose of this standard is to establish a test method that includes an arbitration procedure and a routine procedure to determine the dielectric breakdown voltage of insulating liquids. These procedures apply to petroleum oils, hydrocarbons, and askarels used as insulating and cooling media in cables, transformers, oil-filled power switches, and other equipment. The arbitration procedure, with modifications, is used to test silicone fluids (see the methods indicated in ASTM D 2225). The suitability of using the referee or routine procedure to test liquids with viscosities greater than 900 cSt (5000SUS) at 40°C (104°F) has not been determined. 2 This method is recommended for acceptance tests carried out on raw insulating liquids received from vendors in tank vehicles and drums. It can also be used for routine testing of power system equipment with nominal voltages up to 230 kV. 3 This method is not recommended for testing filtered, degassed and dehydrated oils before or during filling of power system equipment, with nominal voltages greater than 230 kV; nor to test samples of these oils taken from equipment after filling; In these cases, the test method indicated in the ASTM D 1816 standard is recommended. 4 The SI and English measurement systems are accepted. 5 The materials, operations and equipment used in the application of the standard may present risks. This standard is not intended to point out all the industrial safety problems related to its application. The user has the responsibility of establishing the precautions that must be taken or the risks that exist before using it, the appropriate conditions of industrial safety and occupational health and, likewise, applying the current legislation in this regard.
