Scope
ESDU 85007 presents a step-by-step calculation procedure for the evaluation of the individual stress components associated with the contact region of two unlubricated elastic bodies subjected to normal and tangential loading. The procedure covers elliptical@ circular and line (rectangular) contact areas. Special cases that arise where the solutions may become indeterminate@ or can be simplified@ are treated separately. The method also assumes that the maximum compressive stress and lengths of the axes of the contact ellipse are known; values for those quantities may be found using Part I@ ESDU 78035@ which deals with stresses due to contact under normal load alone. Although the stresses found apply strictly to unlubricated contact@ they represent the worst case@ and in fact are also valid for boundary lubrication and are approximately correct for very thin films in elastohydrodynamic lubrication@ that is@ at low surface velocities and low lubricant viscosities. Part II@ ESDU 84017@ presents graphically the results of some of these calculations but only for a limited range of values of some of the variables such as friction coefficient@ Poisson's ratio@ axis ratio of the contact ellipse@ and so on. ESDU 94034 introduces a Fortran program (ESDUpac A9434) that implements the calculation procedure.
