Scope
1.1 These requirements specified in this standard apply to electromagnetic interference (EMI) filters installed in or connected to circuits whose voltage does not exceed 600V and installed in accordance with the provisions of the National Electrical Code. 1.2 These requirements specified in this standard apply to filters used to attenuate unwanted radio frequency signals (such as noise or interference) generated by electromagnetic sources. These filters consist of capacitors and inductors used alone or in combination, and may also include resistors. 1.3 These requirements specified in this standard apply to simple filters, power line connection filters, direct plug-in filters and equipment filters. 1.4 These requirements specified in this standard do not apply to transient pulse suppressors (i.e., devices used to smooth surge voltages in power circuits, such as variable resistors, silicon diodes, metal oxide film varistors and spark arresters) . This standard also does not apply to outdoor or electromagnetic interference filters with a rating exceeding 400A. 1.5 These requirements specified in this standard do not apply to direct plug-in and power cord-connected products with more than two sockets. Direct-press plug-in products with more than two sockets and an electromagnetic interference filter shall be inspected according to the requirements of the UL 498 "Plugs and Sockets" standard for power connectors. Power cord-connected products with more than two sockets and an electromagnetic interference filter are inspected as temporary power connectors. The electromagnetic interference filters that are part of these products shall be inspected to determine whether they meet the corresponding requirements of this standard.
