This standard is applicable to the determination of water absorption of rocks that do not disintegrate when exposed to water. The water absorption of rocks can be expressed by natural water absorption and forced water absorption. The natural water absorption rate of rock is the ratio of the mass of water absorbed by the specimen under the action of atmospheric pressure to the dry mass of the specimen. The forced water absorption rate of rock is the ratio of the mass of water absorbed by the specimen under vacuum or pressurized conditions to the dry mass of the specimen.
