- This standard introduces the hardware and protocol specifications for local systems, while specifications for remote systems are included in other standards. This standard covers direct local systems in which a handheld unit (HHU) is connected to a tariff device or group of devices. Connections via electrical or optical coupling may be permanent or detachable. The protocol is based on the basic reference model for communication between open systems (OSI). Taking into account that some systems are already in use, special attention has been paid to ensuring compatibility with existing systems and/or system components and their associated protocols. This protocol allows reading and programming of rate devices. Its design is particularly suitable for electrical measurement environments, especially those with electrical isolation and software protection requirements. Although the protocol is clearly defined, it also leaves room for application by users. This standard describes the hardware and software prerequisites that allow the exchange of data between the tariff unit and the HHU. The connection to the HHU can be permanent or detachable. Electrical and optical couplers can be used. Electrical contacts are recommended as fixed connections. The optocoupler should be easily detachable for data collection via the HHU. This standard includes some parts of ISO 7498 and adds further conditions such as optical interfaces, protocols for controlling baud rate conversion (switching), and data transmission without receiving acknowledgment. The preliminary work was based on the ISO 7498 reference model for communication in open systems.
