This standard specifies the product classification, terminology, and operating environmental conditions of traction motors. This standard specifies the basic technical requirements for traction motors, acceptance rules, nameplates and markings, warranty period and accompanying documents and spare parts. This standard applies to rotating electrical machines on electrically driven locomotives or vehicles for railway and road transport, and are collectively referred to as traction motors. Such a locomotive or vehicle may obtain power from an external power source or from an internal energy source. This standard does not apply to motors used in electric industrial vehicles powered by batteries (forklifts, trucks, stackers, etc.); this standard also does not apply to micro motors, such as front window wiper motors on locomotives or vehicles.
