- This standard specifies test methods for the content of components that may saponify in petroleum products under test conditions. However, additives such as sulfide, phosphide, halide and certain other elements will also interact with acids and alkalis, so these compounds will affect the correct result of the saponification value. For example, used internal combustion engine crankcase oil and used turbine oil contain such substances, and attention should be paid to this point in the measurement results.
