SUMMARY The chemical processes associated with the biosynthesis and degradation of the photosynthetic pigments in algae produce large amounts of CO@ Senescent cells are found to produce CO in excess of that that can be accounted for only from degradation of chlorophyll indicating the existence of additional plant sources of CO. Our results indicate that plants may be the Q source of 108 tons or more of CO per year.
