The purpose of this standard is to describe a test method to determine the content of free calcium oxide (free lime) in cements, extracting it with ethylene glycol and titrating the glycolate formed with dilute hydrochloric acid. NOTES: 1 This is a rapid method to determine the free calcium oxide content in freshly manufactured clinker. When this method is applied to cement or clinker of a certain age, it must be taken into account that calcium hydroxide may exist and that said compound is determined, by this procedure, together with free calcium oxide. 2 This standard will be reviewed when the corresponding CEN standard comes into force.
