These test methods are applied to electrical insulating materials, and are intended to obtain a first indication of their behavior when subjected to an ignition source. The results obtained allow controlling the constancy of the properties of a material, giving an indication of the progress in the development of insulating materials, as well as a relative comparison and classification of various materials. These methods are used for quality control and product evaluation. However, they are not valid to determine the fire behavior or the fire risk of the elements of a piece of equipment, since the dimensions of an insulating system, the design and heat transmission to the adjacent metal parts, etc., have a great influence on the flammability of the insulating materials used.
