The purpose of this standard is to specify a method for determining the total free alkali content of commercial soaps, excluding compositions containing them (1). This method is not applicable when the soap contains additives (alkali silicates, etc.) that can be decomposed by sulfuric acid under the test conditions. This method is not applicable to colored soaps, if the coloring interferes with the appreciation of the phenolphthalein change.
