1. Scope 1.1 This standard applies to electric motors and generators designed to be installed and used in accordance with the Canadian Electrical Code, Part I, in non-hazardous locations. Note. The word “machine” used in the text of this standard designates motors and generators interchangeably. 1.2 Chapters 1 to 6 are of a general nature and apply, unless otherwise indicated, to motors and generators covered by Chapters 7 to 12 as follows: (a) Chapter 7: DC and AC machines ( including universal motors) with an IEC frame height less than or equal to 80; (b) Chapter 8: AC machines (including universal machines) with an IEC frame height between 90 and 280 and a nominal voltage of not more than 750 V; (c) Chapter 9: AC machines over 750 V or with an IEC frame height equal to or greater than 315; (d) Chapter 10: all DC machines with an IEC frame height equal to or greater than 90; (e) Chapter 11: portable and standby generators; and (f) Chapter 12: AC machines with variable speed inversion. 1.3 This standard defines basic requirements for machines and does not exclude those imposed by other standards of the Canadian Electrical Code, Part Two. 1.4 This standard does not cover (a) sealed (hermetic) motors e.g. in refrigeration motor compressors; (b) electrical machines used in aircraft and marine service installations, engines for land transport equipment and machines used in underground mines.
