This European Standard describes two methods for determining the fineness of cement. The sieving method is only used to detect the presence of coarse particles in the cement. This method is mainly suitable for checking and controlling the production process. With the air permeability (Blaine) method, the specific surface area (mass referred to the surface) is measured by comparison with a reference cement sample. The determination of the specific surface serves mainly to check the uniformity of the grinding process of a single plant. This method only allows a limited judgment on the properties of the cement used1). The methods are applicable to all cements defined in the ENV 1972 standard)
