Scope
This standard specifies the method for determining the moisture content of polyethylene terephthalate pellets. This method is generally applicable to the determination of moisture content in the range of 0.002 to 0.05% (m/m). Moisture content is important for material processing. In material processing, in order to prevent degradation, the moisture content should be kept below a few parts per ten thousand. This method is not suitable for polyethylene terephthalate samples containing significant amounts of volatile non-aqueous compounds with significant vapor pressure at room temperature. Errors caused by the presence of small amounts of acetaldehyde in dry polyethylene terephthalate pellets are allowed. However, the presence of the most volatile compounds should be regularly checked using some method such as gas chromatography. This type of inspection is particularly necessary for new types or grades of materials.
